According to Expansion Management Magazine, citizens of Rochester, New York are privy to the best quality of life in the United States. Sitting on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Rochester has beautiful views and four distinct seasons. If planning a visit to the area, make sure to stop by 1 Mustard Street, the home of French's Mustard. Just a guess though, but this attraction is not the sole reason that residents are so satisfied with their lives. Perhaps some of this satisfaction actually results from an avoidance of one of life's worst stressors. Many people around the nation, and certainly within New York State, have horrendous commutes to and from work. Driving can be extremely frustrating and stressful on both the body and mind. Rochester may have alleviated some of these stresses by creating a freeway system that is very extensive and does a great job of connecting the various parts of the city.
Interestingly though, some of Rochester’s past troubles have circled around the exact same freeway system. The New York State Thruway runs near, but not through, Rochester. It seems that quite some time ago while the Thruway was under construction, the mayor of Rochester and the governor of New York had a disagreement that resulted in the Thruway being diverted from downtown Rochester. This seemingly insignificant event stunted the growth of the area. During the 1950s when the Rochester freeway system was designed and implemented, it was created with the assumption that the metropolitan population would be around five million by the year 2000. In fact, the current metropolitan population is only around one million.
Granted, this is probably a very good thing today, and has much to do with the high quality of living. There is an inner loop that circles the immediate downtown area and an outer loop that circles outside the city limits. In addition to these two freeways, numerous other thoroughfares connect the outlaying communities to the downtown area. Today, there are three Rochester exits off the diverted New York State Thruway. If passing by, take a moment and see what America’s most satisfied citizens are up to.
