Long Island, NY Automobile Transport Service
It is virtually impossible to visit, commute from, or travel on Long Island without spending some amount of time on I-495. Those that frequently come in close proximity with this major thoroughfare may know it better as the Long Island Expressway. This extremely traveled roadway stretches seventy-one miles from the Queens Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan to near Riverhead, which is located in Suffolk County. Due to the high volume of vehicles carried on the Long Island Expressway, it has earned the reputation as being more like a parking lot than that of an actual route in which one would rely.
Thankfully, in June of 2005, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes were completed in an attempt to rectify or at least improve the situation. At this point, the Expressway boasts 8 lanes, which includes a HOV lane and three additional lanes in each direction. This seems to have been somewhat successful as the I-495 now moves more efficiently than both the Northern State Parkway and the Southern State Parkway. In reality though, it should come as no surprise that this roadway is not sufficient enough to carry all the vehicles attempting to use it. The major holdback of this Expressway stems from its age. Construction began in 1939 when SUVs were not even a figment of the imagination and when the sheer volume of travelers was significantly less.
However, if you do find yourself on the Long Island Expressway heading towards Riverhead during the summertime, check out the annual Long Island Blues Festival or the Polish Festival. The town, which was founded in 1792, also has some nice parks, beaches and a marina worth visiting. This small community of around 28,000 (as of the last census) also has a weekly Farmer’s Market held on Thursdays. On the other hand, if you find yourself headed in the opposite direction on the Long Island Expressway, your opportunities for sightseeing in Manhattan are endless. Although it does not appear on the Top 10 list of Things to See Before You Die, the oldest tree in metropolitan New York is indeed located near the Expressway in Queens. It is visible when traveling westbound on I-495.
