However, 136 miles to the north sits the state capital of Albany. Although the city itself only boasts a population of around 94,000, the metropolitan area is in fact home to around 900,000 New Yorkers. Albany’s history is extensive, as it is the forth-oldest city in the United States. Yet, if history is not your thing, the city has many other attractions that might be of more interest. Albany welcomes a lot of travelers throughout the year, as it is situated at the crossroads between New York, Boston, Montreal, and Buffalo. Three particular streets to keep an eye out for are Lark Street, Pearl Street, and Broadway. This district is home to the city’s nightlife and other entertainment venues. Here, one can find coffee houses, shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars, just to name a few. With regards to bars, alcohol is served until 4am, as opposed to the standard 2am. Since drinking and driving is obviously a behavior to be avoided at all costs, call upon the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) for public transportation information. This Authority was formed in 1970 as a means to consolidate the various private operators into one succinct unit. The capital area of Albany is serviced by 60 different transportation routes that operate at various times of day, although few run past midnight. In the years to come the fleet of busses will be joined by 22 new hybrid units. If you are traveling from farther than a car ride away, the Albany International Airport is located in Colonie, which is just a short distance from the capital. Otherwise, there are also Greyhound bus stations and Amtrak service points. If you are headed into Albany by car from New York City, it is highly likely that you will be arriving via the New York State Thruway, which as it rolls into Albany, is known as Interstate 87. This toll road, built in the 1950s and costing $600 million, is the longest toll road in the United States. In 1997, a new debate arose when the original construction bond was finally paid off. Residents were anticipating that the toll fees would be removed, however, the state legislature voted otherwise. Today, the tolls remain in effect for most of the Thruway, but even this could very easily change with time. Numerous candidates running for office have professed a disdain for upholding the fees.
